So many ways to offer students Authentic Learning Experiences:
As a nurse, I am familiar with the Authentic Activities used in nursing school. An example of Authentic Activities is situations where we use simulations such as the mannikins used in the skills lab to practice IM injections or starting IVs. This opportunity allows students the scaffolding guidance to observe correct procedure, and then practice the technique in a safe environment in order to build up their skills and confidence. Nursing students will then have opportunities to further develop those skills in clinical experiences that are almost identical to the real-world tasks they will be responsible for once they graduate.
In other areas:
In elementary education, Authentic Activities might be problem solving math problems as linked to below. One activity focuses on "green" concepts - a strategy that helps develop early environmentally conscious habits that may last a lifetime. Here is an example of some Authentic Activities related to Math Concepts.
In high school, "tech school" experiences or "life skills" classes offer students opportunities to develop trades or learn about the many "grown-up" tasks that await them after graduation, such as budget balancing, job hunting or the "Birthing Belly" worn by students in some health classes that emulates the effects of pregnancy.
For college students, experiences, such as the one that resulted in this webpage, are Authentic Activities. I now know how to build a webpage - a skill that will likely serve me well in the future. Other college type Authentic Activities might be creating newsletters, developing a service learning activity or large group projects.
